With the release of Not Getting What You Want, One Step At The Time, Sean Lochridge, AKA Imp Of Perverse, imposes his own brand of cool without pretence. We asked him three quick fire questions the record...
Hello Sean Lochridge. The new record Not Getting What You Want, One Step At A Time, what is it about?
The title is an offhand remark my girlfriend made to me in jest after a series of failed attempts by me to do some trivial things, and I just really liked the phrase, so I decided to save it for an album title. I guess the songs are to some degree about that, continuing to do what you like regardless of them resulting in what you had hoped for or not. I recently found a quote of by Greg Saunier that has stayed in my mind and I think influenced part of this album as well. "There is a value in not succeeding...but also not stopping".
Who do you think the closest signed band with a similar style to yours is?
Yo La Tengo is probably the band I most emulate because I enjoy their songwriting and style, as well as how they vary from album to album and even song to song within each album, which is something I try to do with my own recordings. However I usually hear people say my music reminds them of Dinosaur Jr or REM which are both big influences on me as well.
Finally, the most important question. What's the best bar in Austin, Texas?
The Mohawk, I've seen more shows there than anywhere else in Austin and they consistently host great bands of all different styles. The first show I ever saw in Austin was there when I drove three hours to see a Black Angels halloween show as a teenager, and it's been my favorite place ever since.
