Here' a list about what Bloody Death Skull sing about. Love, day dreams, the cosmos, animals, television, dead things, bad things, cute things, existential pickles, oh yes and being stuck in the mind of a teenager forever! Betsy's Back is the first single from Bloody Death Skull's upcoming EP The Haunting of Bloody Death Skull out this Friday. Here's what the band had to tell us...
The New Record
"Aside from a session we did in a studio for Converse Rubber Tracks, this is really the most polished recording we’ve ever done. Most of our output consists of music captured on broken tape recorders or straight into the computer without a microphone, songs made up while recording, with toys and random objects serving as instruments, along with ukulele, of course. BDS is a shape-changing band. It morphs according to whoever is playing on that particular day and we really wanted to capture what it’s like when John and Bridgette play. John plays a guitar rigged to a KAOScillator and twenty-five pedals. Bridgette adds her ethereal Korg keyboard. Those wailing vocals on Gloom, that’s all her. With Halloween coming up I thought it would be perfect to pick four of my songs that fit the “haunted” theme."
The Story
"We were playing a show organized by musician Ben Vaughn at Palms Restaurant, a wonderful dive bar in middle of the desert. It’s a strange magical place. I like to interact with an audience and mess around, make jokes, and if I’m drunk, and I was very drunk that night, the whole thing tends to go to another level. I became obsessed with a woman wearing a puffy white jacket who looked like she had just come off the ski slopes. I kept talking to her from stage and eventually made up a whole song about wanting to go skiing with her and the band got into it and we created some kind of romantic masterpiece that culminated with pouring whiskey in her mouth. I think this story epitomizes the mischievous spirit that permeates every aspect of Bloody Death Skull. Our songs are playful, mischievous, a little bit sloppy, and dangle on the edge of inappropriate."
How It Came To Be
"It was a dark night. Gerard’s pet tortoise had escaped and we went looking for it in the park behind the house. As we searched, this eerie fog rolled in. It seemed to get thicker and enveloped us from all sides. We heard the snapping of sticks nearby and suddenly out of nowhere this crazy looking homeless man foaming at the mouth came running out of the darkness and right towards us. He stopped and his eyes started bulging and he tightened his mouth up like maybe he was about to vomit and then he screamed BLOODY…DEATH…SKULL!! He bit Gerard on the arm and ran away. And that’s how we became a band."
"I think our brains like to be surprised"
3rd Opinion
BDS are one exuberant bunch of Rock n Rollers. The soon to be released EP The Haunting Of is sure to be a quick fire succession of fast paced, furiously intriguing guitar filled numbers, well if the sneak preview Betsy's Back is anything to go by anyway. It's a sound which feels like a steady continuation of the band's last efforts King Kong and Space Age Sock Hop, maybe the group have just found an extra piece of bite from their favoured Blues heavy Rock N Roll flavours? That's what Betsy's Back suggests to us... It's a sound which the band rightly say depends upon the musical relationship of John and Bridgette. You can hear a certain chemistry resonating between the guitar and the fuzzed keys which is only amplified by the effects found on each. The guitar solos, the call and response, the wave like backing harmonies, it all just adds to the intrigue.
