Dublin's Indie scene is thriving. Young artists are part of a new wave of musicians creating brilliant new noise, shaping the sound of a generation in the Irish capital. Meet Very Happy Boy, Dublin's yet to be recognized sensation who is churning out the most special of this music...
Sam Chessmore, aka Very Happy Boy, is a young artist from Dublin. he is also part of Tobi The Dog, a bunch of 17 year olds who have made this!
It's heavily influenced by Albert B, which pushed me to try and keep the instrumentation organic and the words earnest. This track, Making, is the longest on the album is probably the most open.
I suppose this record means a really huge amount to me, so much so that I seriously considered not releasing it. The album is named 'April '16' because all of the songs were recorded in that time and I suppose it captures how I felt in that month.
What Sam is creating with Very Happy Boy is different than Tobi The Dog. It is still experimental, weird and Lo-Fi, but it has a resigned sort of happiness to it (but a melancholic feel too). The Lo-Fi thing speaks for itself, if that's what you've got to record on then that's the sound that comes. But there's a ghostly cool about this record. Maybe it's the echo, but the somber sound spreads and creates something very intelligent and unique. The spoken words, the relaxing tones, the crash of drums. It works very well. The first track is called Ice. Relaxing and catchy at the same time. Now Making follows in the same vein. And there is more to come...
"I have an album made, I just don't really have a label or outlet to release it on", shares Sam. So this little introducing is more of a message in a bottle. If you like what you hear, share it, tell your pals and maybe you'll hear more soon. If not, Third Outing will sign him up in the very near future!
