Who are Zooz? Third Outing caught up with chief songwriter and drummer Kieron to talk about summer in London, going bowling and their new EP Surf In Stereo out via Super Fan 99!
3rd: Hi Zooz, I've heard it's your first interview? Welcome to the world of interviews! How's summer in London?
Kieron: Yes this is our first interview. Summer in London has been pretty good thanks, sweaty for me, it's been quite warm and we’ve been quite busy. Mike and I both also play in Hunck and Yoofs so we’ve been sort of trying to juggle the whole thing and it probably didn’t help that I went to Glastonbury for 2 weeks!
3rd: Glastonbury! With Zooz, Hunck and Yoofs you could probably throw your own Glastonbury! Introduce the band to the Third Outing readers?...Zooz that is!
K: The band currently has five members, Mike and his brother Rich, Tottenham Thom from Hunck, Zyggy and then me. The band is kind of mine and Mike’s project, we call the shots. It was something I always wanted to do but it took a while for me to find the right people. After I joined Hunck stuff just started falling into place, and then I started drumming for Yoofs, met Mike and Rich and it all just went from there. Lots of the same members cropping up in all three bands, its all a bit incestuous but what do you expect…we’re all from Dorset. Except for Zyggy, but we heard he did have a little fling with his cousin so we let him in the band!
3rd: Classic Zyggy! What's Zooz's sound in one sentence?
K: Zooz's sound in one sentence…ummmm…not right now I can’t! Monday morning...
'We ended up on Super Fan 99 because Luke from the label approached us and we liked him and he didn't ask us for any money. That always helps with the trust aspect if you ask me. I like how much thought he puts into the detail of physical releases. I haven’t got my hands on a copy yet but if and when I do I’m sure it will be something to cherish'.
3rd: To the new EP release. I really dig the songs Surf In The Storm and Another Day In The Sun. How have these songs evolved with time?
K: Surf In The Storm came from a riff I came up with in the back of a van at V Festival. I was working there putting up concert tents and basically hiding from every aspect of the festival in the back of a van! Anyone who’s been to V Festival will understand that the best place to be is in the back of a van.
And then when I was in Thailand I kind of revived the riff and it suddenly became something kind of cool. Then it was just an instrumental demo until Mike came over and added his lyrical touches. We work well together because I struggle to dream up vocal melodies over the top of things where as he doesn't. Another Day In The Sun was just a demo I recorded in Hackney. It’s basically about the times when I've just been doing what I want all the time and feeling a bit guilty about it.
3rd: Your first 7" True Love is also great. I've heard it is also already sold out. Congratulations!
K: Thanks very much I’m glad you like it. Yes it did sell out apparently. Did you get yours? It’s such early days for us with all of it really that this EP is just like a little hello to anyone who wants meet Zooz. Three of the songs were mixed and mastered by Dan. E Brown so it kind of all has a similar sound so we thought, chuck it all on an EP. I think its an up-beat sunny EP and it’s nice and loud.
3rd: Luke from Super Fan 99 told me you just played your second show and you sounded like world beaters. How did you end up on the label?
K: Yeah our second show definitely felt better. I think that's majorly down to the venue and sound man. I way preferred the second gig but at the first gig we got a £60 rider and a burger. We ended up on Super Fan 99 because Luke from the label approached us and we liked him and he didn't ask us for any money. That always helps withe the trust aspect if you ask me. I like how much thought he puts into the detail of physical releases. I haven’t got my hands on a copy yet but if and when I do i’m sure it will be something to cherish.
3rd: So what's next now for Zooz?
K: We do have another show planned but not for a while yet! Sorry to anyone who wanted to see us at The Macbeth, it got cancelled because the headline band broke up. It’s not always easy. We would be booking more shows but we’re off to do a couple of festivals with Hunck which puts half of Zooz out of action. We’ll have to see what happens in the second half of the year. Definitely lots more music! Lots of recordings as well. I’ve just laid down the foundations for four new songs so we’ve got plenty to be getting on with.
K: No worries, thanks for talking to us! Dessert island drink would have to be water probably; fizzy if you have it!
