Hovvdy have just released their début record Taster, and in no time at all, boisterous reviews have followed. But we want to know a little bit more...here's a quick Q&A with Austin's hottest band right now. Third Outing spoke to Charlie Martin and Will Taylor of Hovvdy...
The new record Taster is a bit of a pretty well-balanced masterpiece. Was there a theme behind the album?
Will: Thanks! The experience of creating those songs together and then translating them into an "album" is the theme for me. It’s the first time I've done that, and it was really fun exploring that process with Charlie.
Problem and In My Head are tracks that stand out for us. Could you tell us more about these two tracks?
Will: Problem and In My Head were written about the same time, when Charlie was out of town and I was back home. In My Head is the one I wrote, the song is a short narrative that changes perspectives a few times. Sometimes I wish we had jammed at the end to make it to a full 2 minutes.
What's it like to attend one of your gigs?
Charlie: We play with Sam (bassist) and Andrew (drummer), who both are great. Our songs might come across a little heavier live than on the recordings; but we like to play slow and not that loud also.
"Having happy and sad dreams whilst sleeping on a pillow you like"
Hovvdy's sound in one sentence?
Charlie: Having happy and sad dreams whilst sleeping on a pillow you like.
The worst and best things about Austin are...?
Will: The heat is worst, my dog Layla is best.
If Hovvdy could only play one city in UK for a gig with one current band, where and with who would it be?
Charlie: London with our long lost friends Happyness
