An Interview With Grotto Girl
By Robin Ecoeur
Grotto Girl! How did you form and what triggered it?
The band came together after a previous band involving Ben, our drummer, and myself, dissolved. Grady, our bass man and certified Strat guy when he gets the chance, was kind enough to lend his excellent bass playing and voice box as well as song writing chops to the group and off we went.
Grotto Girl's sound in one sentence?
Pure pop for now people!
Okay pure pop people! Marcel Waits For No One has a real Teenage Fanclub feel whereas Marcel And Me sounds a bit more like Pavement...
Both tracks were written about a year ago as we were preparing to go on tour. I'm very flattered by the comparisons but honestly when I am writing and recording I have no idea how things will turn out. I don't really know what else to say about them though. I like the tune of the former and the lyrics of the latter, although I'm not sure what they are about.
"I think the sound we think of as indie rock was better formulated in the 90's".
We love the concept album about Marcel. Could you tell us 3 things about Marcel people don't know?
Marcel is the tiny elf guy on the cover. I drew that picture and thought it would be funny to name every track after a silly drawing and completely alleviate the stress of coming up with meaningful titles! All I've decided about him is: he's nice enough, he wears it well and he rarely tells the truth
Indie Rock is a 90's music. Do you agree?
Im not sure. I think the sound we think of as "Indie Rock" was better formulated in the 90's for sure. But that term is pretty nebulous at this point anyway. There are "Indie Rock" records coming out on major labels and marketed as such. I do think the tag makes people separate a band like Guided by Voices from The Who when they sound pretty similar in a lot of ways. I think the 80's were the best time for independent rock music though, with bands like The Replacements, The Pixies, Meat Puppets, R.E.M., the Verlaines...
Tell us a story which epitomises this?
They are usually pretty tame if a little drunken and silly because of my personal nervousness about being onstage and singing especially. I generally just embarrass the rest of the band by trying to get them to cover Rod Stewart songs.
