This song has been stuck in my head for days now. “I can't wait for you to leave New York, I can't wait for you to get divorced" casually sings Jack Stansbury, leader of the indie rock outfit Princess Reason.
The name comes from a character in Norton Juster's children’s novel Phantom Tollbooth, and in fact we aren't too far away from fairy tales here. Why? Because Jack and his band (Mike Allison, drums and Morgan Spaner, vocals and bass) really are living the dream with the release of their new EP Your Divorce.
Princess Reason are reviving the 1990's. When you first listen to the EP, Pavement and Guided By Voices are all over the songs. There’s the David Berman style, kind of jerked vocals, added to the coolness of Morgan’s bass and Mike's slow soft drum rhythms, all of which merge together to create something truly magical.
“I think the inherent sound of Princess Reason songs stay the same no matter what the recording situation is”.
Princess Reason are undeniably on the rise. Your Divorce is out now via Nebraskan Coast. Produced by Chester Gwazda in Baltimore, it was the first time the band recorded outside of the bedroom set-up. The EP stands out from their previous work but importantly it doesn't lose its simplicity and sincerity.
