Dark, sweet and intimate

“If you can’t find a cigarette, and even if you didn’t just have sex, putting this on while you lay in bed staring at the ceiling is almost as good” - Jeremy; reviewer on the band’s Bandcamp page. Discover the band everyone will talk about within' the next months...
Cigarettes After Sex are a Brooklyn based ambient pop collective led by Greg Gonzalez. They have made two releases in their history: I. in 2012 and their latest release, Affection EP, in June 2015. Cigarettes produce dreamy, lush, and intimate rock music that encapsulates the loveliest feeling known to any homo sapien, ancient or modern: curling up next to someone late at night.
If there are concept albums then these guys are almost a concept band - one that produces music inspired by and in tribute to these dark, sweet moments of late-night intimacy. Greg Gonzalez’s voice whispers secrets over slow drums and reverb drenched guitars. The group could almost be likened to a more heartfelt and less abstract version of Beach House. The latest EP is comprised of a cover of an REO Speedwagon song from 1980 Keep on Loving You and an original track Affection. The Cigarettes version strips away the mighty hair, gated reverb snares and wailing guitar fills of the 1980's and draws out a much more personal and vulnerable sound, providing a genuinely original take on what is a genuinely obscure 80's song.
“When I played it it felt like there was a hidden desperation, or melancholy as you’ve said, in it that you didn’t necessarily get from the original version. It was just apparent to me when I played it and slowed it down.”
The pièce-de-résistance in their catalogue, however, is a track from their first release, I. called Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby. This encapsulates the band in its purest form - with tight production and catchy melodies to cap it all off. These guys find the beauty in melancholy, and anyone that does that is doing something special.
