A Hot Second With is the first real serious thing we've done, and we intend it to be the first stuff that people hear from us. It’s quick and it’s dirty. We're hoping to leave people a little ruffled and confused, thinking “wow I don’t know what that was, but I like it"'
- The Velveteins
The Velveteins are the latest indie pop and roll duo to conquer Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and the world. With their bass jump and cool, you know that Third Outing are beyond excited to give you the world exclusive sneak preview of their new single Shimmy Shake, but here are 10 things you probably didn't know about The Velveteins...
Volkswagen. In particular a 1977 Volkswagen bus! Our friends from The Velveteins accomplished what all rock and rollers wish to achieve travelling through the west of Canada in their own VW bus. Cool, huh? It was a place to sleep, a place to cook (out of tins on a propane fire) and most importantly a place to sell all of their lucrative tie dye merch! 'It was raw' claims Spencer. Check out The Velveteins cruising in their bus.
Edmonton, Alberta., is the home town of The Velveteins. Spring signals big changes in Canada (finally it stops being so Baltic) and all the best bands make it out of hibernation. 'The local music scene is starting to vibrate along with the warm weather and everybody’s stoked', thus there is no better time for the Canadian duo to release their début record A Hot Second With The Velveteins. We asked the band where they would take us in Edmonton to experience real rock and roll, and it seems a few familiar faces grace the Edmonton scene. 'We would take you to the little indie venues like Wunderbar and The Artery. They are the heart and soul of the city. People like Mac Demarco got their start playing shows there'. We'll get our tickets booked now, then!
Lincoln Parish, know the name? Yes the same Lincoln Parish original guitarist from Kentucky Indie Rock sensations Cage The Elephant. The Velveteins took a break from the cold Canadian winter to record their album in Nashville, TN, with Lincoln Parish as producer. 'His influence definitely bleeds into [A Hot Second With]. In one sentence I would say it’s rock n roll that bends your mind'. The new record, which is available from April 20, is to be released in mp3, CD and cassette format...for every generation of the indie loving family!
Very early Libertines demo. That's the sound Third Outing got the first time we heard The Velveteins and their guitar pop track West Coast Love Affair. 'I've never heard that sort of comparison before! Honestly though, I am quite influenced by British bands, from contemporary bands like Childhood, Palma Violets, Tribes and Peace, to old 60’s stuff like The Kinks and The Beatles'. A good crowd to follow, if you ask us, but perhaps lay off the sauce unlike the likely lads good old Pete and Carl.
Tea! Yes tea is the desert island drink of our friends The Velveteins. A long island ice tea, they are rock and roll after all. As Spencer says 'who wouldn’t want to go have a swim in the ocean and drink one of those''? We agree.
Expect great things to come. Having started life as a band in 2013 The Velveteins have achieved a lot in a short amount of time. 'I really just wanted to get out there and play and perform. An ultimate goal would be to one day play alongside bands that influenced my taste in music and style', says Spencer. However things haven't always been so smooth. 'Over the past year we've thinned out the members who weren't serious about writing good songs, and all the commitment involved with running a band'. Let's hope there's no "Pete Best situation" going on there, nevertheless the line up works.
Innovators isn't a word we often use to describe indie rock and rollers, but The Velveteins justify this description. Not many bands can survive major players leaving the cause. Not many bands remain true to the rock and roll sensibilities of the VW bus. Even fewer bands manage to do this whilst creating a new style of indie rock which, if you imagine a Venn diagram, covers The Born Ruffians, The Libertines, and Red Hot Chili Peppers in one fell swoop! A new kind of band, a new kind of style, a new kind of cool.
Nostalgia and new. Wait, aren't they kind of opposites? Precisely. Just look at The Velveteins album art work, or their band photographs, or even the way they travel and gig; The Velveteins are taking all of their inspiration from the past but adding the original touch to it. Any band can replicate the sounds and styles of the 60's and the 90's, but few can take it and make it better.
Shimmy Shake: the name of the first release from the band's up and coming début record A Hot Second With The Velveteins. Stream Shimmy Shake exclusively on Third Outing and join The Velvetein revolution.
