Grand Mariner move fast and don't look back. If they become the next Strokes nobody knows, but what they do know is that playing music together is what matters the most right now. After creating somewhat of a new scene with bands such as Pill Friends and Surf Curse it seems that a new era of east coast alternative is just around the corner. "New Jersey's cool, seems like everyone's in a band and everybody's into throwing shows". One thing is for certain in 2015, Grand Mariner are ready for it. Here's what the band told us about Third Outing's favourite track 'Unforgiving Sun':
Grand Mariner are a new warm-blooded, ferocious and in their own words, sanguine band straight out of Howell, NJ: DIY is their nature. Throw in an obsession with blood and poppies, add a few lyrics about burning kids and throwing parties and you have Grand Mariner’s debut album 'Happy To Birth', released just over one year ago. Third Outing caught up with the boys from New Jersey with the reassuring news that, don't worry, they will be back again this year with new material.
"I don't know if confident is the right word, sanguine might be more appropriate. It's intimidating because there's so much amazing music out there, you wonder how anybody makes it big any more"
- Grand Mariner
"We wrote the music and lyrics for that song one day at practice jamming on a simple chord progression. The lyrics are pretty tongue-in-cheek. The whole thing with burning churches and children can be interpreted how you like; it was meant to be a nice simple pop song with a familiar and comforting vibe".
Public service announcement: help Third Outing identify the man on the album cover, we like his style. Grand Mariner were unavailable for comment stating "we're not at liberty to talk about the guy in the pool, he's an enigma". Is he your next door neighbour?
'Happy to Birth' by Grand Mariner, 7/10.
